Tom is a new addition to the Roseville office of Finance of America, coming onboard as the first full-time Reverse Mortgage Advisor.
Prior to Finance of America, Tom owned a modest home-improvement contracting firm that specialized in residential energy upgrades using government home loan programs (Energy Efficient Mortgage, EEM); he founded the company with his wife, Lee, in September, 1982. In 2012, Patricia McBarron, a Credit Policy Specialist at HUD, acknowledged that Tom’s company participated in more EEM loans insured through the Santa Ana Home Ownership Center (HOC), than the rest of the nation, combined. Unfortunately, in January of 2022, the nation’s reaction to COVID, and the volatility of the FHA mortgage market finally took its toll.
Raised in Southern California, Tom attended San Diego State University, majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis on Marketing.
He took advantage of his education by dealing blackjack on the Las Vegas Strip for most of the 1970’s.
In September, 1978, having moved back to Newport Beach, Tom met a girl in a grocery store. She had cut in front of him in the check-out line and then proceeded to run out of money! Tom graciously stepped up to cover the lady’s shortage, with hopes he might make a friend. One year later, to the day, they eloped to Las Vegas, and have been living their dream ever since.
Tom is a graduate of the Xerox Professional Sales Institute (PSS) and was a certified trainer.
He is also a student of Dr. Stephan Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and is devoted to the lifestyle. Part of that core philosophy is the commitment to honesty and integrity in everything he does.
Tom holds a California real estate broker’s license, a general contractor’s license, and a private pilot’s license with an instrument rating.
And, he plays golf poorly…

Frequently Asked Questions
The total number of properties you may look at will depend on several factors, such as your budget and the housing availability in your area. In general, real estate agents recommend that homebuyers look at several properties before making a decision, but there is not an exact number. Most people look at 10 homes, at a minimum, so they can compare them. However, you may find the dream house with more or fewer searches.
When it comes to the best home buying tips, there are different ways to search for properties. Statistics from the National Association of REALTORS® reveal that 51 percent of buyers searched and found their homes on the internet, while 30 percent used real estate agents. Other ways to search for homes include asking friends, relatives, neighbors and homebuilders for help. A small percentage of homebuyers used newspaper advertisements and yard or open house signs to search for homes.
Although a pre-approval is not one of the required steps to buying a house, it can certainly help you stand out in a competitive market with many buyers. A pre-approval can show sellers that you’re serious and capable of getting a mortgage, so they may be more likely to accept your offer.
